Come sit on my back porch swing
Meet me in the pollen days of spring
Every surface is covered in yellow dust
Off in the distance, I hear laughter
Someone else is living ever after
happily, why can't it be us?
When your priorities slide
Meet me halfway outside
Chorus:
Come on, come on, now I know you love it
The times that we could have here
Wouldn't they be the best?
What can I do to make you say yes?
I know, I know it's been a while
I'll win you with my piano key smile
How could you say no?
Come sit on my back porch swing
Meet me in the hot dog days of summer
Daylight savings time
The sun won't set till after nine
And in our screened-in hideaway
Watch the mosquitoes watch their prey
And the fireflies will give and take the limelight
When your priorities slide
Meet me half way outside
*Chorus*
What can I do to make you say yes?
How could you say no?
What can I do to make you say yes?
How could you say no?
Come sit on my back porch swing
Meet me in the quiet days of autumn
Here you can actually hear the leaves falling
I'll be out here serenading the squirrels and birds
And empty furniture until you hear me calling
And come
Sit on my back
PORCH SWINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG
Chorus:
Come on, come on, now I know you love it
The times that we could have here
Wouldn't they be the best?
What can I do to make you say yes?
I know, I know it's been a while
I'll win you with my piano key smile
How could you say no?
No?
A few notes:
This song is about getting back to fun.
Having fun.
Shut up and FUN.
Kind of like the antithesis of this summer because omigosh 2020 is like the worst year ever.
In response to becoming depressed by it, I made a song to shove in depression's face.
So come sit on my back porch swing.
Come hang out.
Be "halfway outside" in all the glorious seasons and enjoy your life.
Forget about all your problems for a little while.
The times that we could have here...wouldn't they be the best?
This song was inspired by The National, one of the greatest bands of all time don't fight me on this I will win.
Their lyrics are so awesome and poem-y that their songs are straight up LITERATURE: Gospel, Secret Meeting, Wasp Nest, Hairpin Turns to name a few...
I wanted to write a song with a similar sense of atmosphere, so I wrote a song based on where I spend the majority of my time nowadays.
Lyrics, Unpacked:
The verses are chock full of seasonal imagery, things I actually see, hear, feel, and sense on my back porch; I included things pretty ubiquitous to all back porches in those particular seasons so that the song could transport one to a different time and place.
Some of my favorite lines:
"Piano key smile" - like a really toothy dorky one (see minute 2:08 in the music video)
"The fireflies will give and take the limelight" - little lightning bugs both give off lime light but are also very good at diverting people's attention on summer nights "Look! Fireflies!", e.g. taking the limelight
"When your priorities slide, meet me halfway outside" - When fun finally becomes important enough for you, I'll be here to enjoy it with you!
A side note:
People may think I lay in beat tracks for my drums.
Oh no, no, no, no, nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
I play my own beats.
And make my own tracks.
Which is why I look insane in the music video playing the keyboard and why I *may* not be 100% on rhythm all the time (sorry, Dad).
My offbeat beats are part of the character and charm in every song. <3
FAQ:
Allieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Why didn't you sing about winterrrrrrrrr????????
Because I don't hang out on my back porch in winter. I hibernate like a normal bear inside. Duh.
Allieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Why are your music videos always just about you and only you and nobody else and just stuff around where you live and not like a set or anything professional?
Um, cuz the budget for these videos is only like $20 and I already spent it on snacks, so...
Allieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Why are you in your convertible in the movieeeeeeeeeeeeeeee???
Convertibles are like the back porches of vehicles. They allow you to have all the conveniences of a car (like a porch has all the conveniences of a house), except that it's HALFWAY OUTSIDE.
So, it fits the theme.
