Lyrics:
We were a cedar of Lebanon
Planted by Adonai
Beside the waters
We were a cedar of Lebanon
Remember how we grew proud
And now
Now we're gone
We were a cedar above the trees
We were a shield from the sun
The rivers run below us into the field
And as we grow, in our shadow
Dwell the nations of the land
We were a cedar reaching to
The Sovereign Hand
Even Eden envied us
Like no one could destroy this canopy
Could it be that our roots reach
Down to the streams in the Great Deep
With our exalted hearts
And shadowing shroud
We grew tall, so tall
And so proud
Enemies came, they came
And cut us down
Every long limb
And beautiful bough
Our ruins sink down beneath the earth
We were a cedar of Lebanon
We were a cedar of Lebanon
We were a cedar of Lebanon
Remember how we grew proud
And now
Now we're gone
We were a cedar of Lebanon
And now we're gone
We were a cedar of Lebanon
And now we're gone
A Few Notes:
This song is inspired by Ezekiel 31 when Pharaoh is compared to Assyria, a cedar of Lebanon, that grew up a strong nation and was destroyed because of its pride.
I absolutely love the imagery in the prophets. I found the "Kingdom" setting on my keyboard which sounded all majestic and glorious, which reminded me of some of the language used to describe the ancient nations. While inspired by Ezekiel 31, I did bring in some other descriptions from the Psalms. I wanted to musically tell the story of a great nation rising and falling in order to be kind of like a memorial saying: "Look what we were and remember why we fell".
It's a reminder, warning, and call to repentance.
